 Tutoring that works!

  • Math:  We specialize in the non-typical learner, and love helping students go from struggling, to loving math.
  • Reading, Spelling, & Phonics:  As experienced and certified Barton tutors, we help both dyslexic and non-dyslexic students achieve success in reading, spelling, and phonics.
  • Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing (LiPS):  This program is not for everyone. It is, however, vital for students with deficiencies in phonemic awareness and/or auditory conceptualization. Intact auditory conceptualization is a vital component of reading success, and LiPS is scientifically proven to do this. • Handwriting evaluation and remediation:  People are often judged by their handwriting, and students with dysgraphia struggle to get their thoughts on paper. Students needing help with handwriting, as well as other services, can have this rolled into their general sessions.
  • Screening for Dyslexia:  If you suspect your child has dyslexia, this comprehensive screening will illuminate if your child fits the dyslexia profile. The screening, assessments, reports and recommendations for dyslexic students have changed lives as students have that Light-Bulb Moment and suddenly understand why they think and learn differently.
  • Handwriting Evaluation:  This is a simple test developed by the experts at Handwriting Without Tears to accurately assess, set goals, and determine a course of remediation.

What you can expect of me:

  • Support:  The whole idea of this relationship is to help your child achieve the goal of becoming a better reader, writer, and speller. For students with auditory conceptualization deficits and/or dyslexia, this means reprogramming the brain through specific, targeted tutoring. This takes time and commitment, and sometimes it means that you, as a parent, have to do the most difficult thing of all — stop trying to help. I will be available to you throughout this process for consultation and direction regarding the educational needs of your child.
  • Open Communication:  I will be in contact with you regarding your child’s challenges and progress. I trust that you will let me know when you need more information or have any questions.
  • Knowledge and professionalism:   There are many programs that promise to help children with reading difficulties. It will be my job to determine the best methodology for your child, and relay it in a way that promotes understanding and progress. If I am unable to help your child, I will relay that information to you as well, and will work with you to find the help he/she needs.
  • Responsibility and accountability:   I will bring knowledge, experience, motivation, and skill to each session, and will work diligently to ensure your child succeeds and retains what they learn. I will do all preparation prior to lessons and structure lessons in such a way as to optimize our time. Even with this, there is only so much a tutor can do, and much of what we accomplish will depend on your child’s willingness to dig in and do the work, even when it gets hard. Together, we can make this happen!
